Detailed Itinerary for 3 Days Akagera Wildlife Safari
Day 1: Pickup from Kigali and Drive to Akagera National Park.
A representative from Explore Rwanda Tours will take you up from Kigali’s airport or accommodation in the morning. After being briefed on the trip, you will have a tour of Kigali, including the city markets, the Kigali genocide museum, the former presidential palace, a few art stores, and other sites. After finishing the city tour, you will depart for Akagera National Park. The drive to Akagera National Park takes between two to three hours.
When you arrive at the park, you will complete the necessary permissions at the gate before proceeding to the visitor center. You will then go from the center to your accommodation. After settling into the hotel, you will be escorted on a boat ride on Lake Ihema. The boat excursion offers possibilities to see crocodiles, hippos, and other wildlife bathing or drinking from the lake. Watch out for the elusive Sitatunga (swamp antelope) and waterbuck.
Later drive to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Full Day Game Drive and Night Game Drive
Get up early and eat breakfast while you wait for the Guide/Driver to pick you up. Today is all about game drives. Our Guide will pick up an experienced park guide to accompany you and take you to the greatest game drives. You will visit several regions of the park while experiencing its terrain, which includes woodland forest, savanna grasslands, riverine forests, and wetlands.
Throughout the morning game drive, keep an eye out for hippos, impala, warthogs, topi, zebras, spotted hyenas, giraffes, buffaloes, crocodiles, elephants and birds. The park guide will play a key part in locating the lions, rhinos, and other elusive animals.
Lunch will be a picnic on the open Savannah plains, giving you the unique experience of dining out in the African wilderness. After lunch, the driver will transport you back to your hotel, where you may rest and swim in the hotel pool.
You can choose to go on another afternoon game drive before the night game drive, or you can go out particularly to locate birds. Akagera is a popular birding location in Rwanda, with over 500 species documented, including the Papyrus Gonolek and Shoebill stork. The park’s large marshes are the ideal site to view birds.
The night game drive is meant to allow you to observe nocturnal species such as leopards, hyenas, mongooses, owls, and primates.

Day 3: Morning Game Drive and Transfer Back to Kigali
Rise up at your leisure and in time for breakfast. Prepare for one final game drive in the park in case you didn’t spot any of the animals. Our Guide/Driver will meet with the park guide and transport you to another area of the park for further wildlife experiences. After you’ve completed this game drive, it’s time to begin the trek back to Kigali. Lunch will be had on the drive back to Kigali. You will be dropped off at a hotel of your choice or Kigali airport as you will advise.
