Gorilla trekking in Uganda is done in two national parks: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which is noted for having the most mountain gorillas, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, both of which are located in the southwestern region of the country. Gorilla trekking is also available in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, as well as Virunga and Kahuzi Biega national parks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park begins very early in the morning with a training on the laws and regulations that must be followed throughout the walk.
Uganda’s Mgahinga gorilla national park has one habituated gorilla family, while Bwindi impenetrable national park has about 22 habituated gorilla families spread across four sectors: Rushaga in the south, Ruhija in the east, Nkuringo in the south, and Buhoma in the north. Mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda takes between 30 minutes and 7 hours, depending on where the gorillas are situated, and throughout the walk, you will be able to see other animal species, different birds, and trees, among other things.
When the mountain gorillas are discovered, you will be permitted to spend an hour with them in their natural environment, where you will be able to observe their daily routines, learn more about their behaviors, take photographs, and film movies.
Uganda also provides gorilla habituation experiences, in which wild mountain gorillas are educated to become accustomed to human presence in preparation for trekking. The gorilla habituation experience in Uganda is only available in the Rushaga area of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and it takes around 2 to 3 years to complete. The gorilla habituation experience begins at the park headquarters very early in the morning with a briefing about the rules, regulations, and expectations.
Following the briefing, you will embark on a jungle hike with a team of park rangers, guides, and researchers. You will be permitted to spend four hours with the mountain gorillas in their habitat to study and observe their routines, behaviors, watch them feed, milk, groom new ones, participate in the naming process, and take photographs, among other things.
