Although Kahuzi Biega national Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo is famously known for its eastern lowland gorillas, the park also offers visitors quite a variety of activities including hiking to the stunning Tshibati waterfalls. Detailed Itinerary for 4 Days Kahuzi Biega Gorilla Trekking and Hike Tshibati Waterfalls Tour.
Day 1: Pickup from Kigali and Transfer to Bukavu in Congo.
After completing your early morning breakfast at your hotel in Kigali or upon arriving at Kigali international airport with an early morning flight, you will be met by your driver guide, who will brief you briefly and drive you to Rubavu via Karongi for lunch in Rusizi at a local restaurant, before we proceed to Rubavu border post, where we will go through immigration, get a DRC visa, and cross over to DR Congo through Rubavu border to your booked lodge for dinner.
Day 2: Track Eastern Lowland Gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National Park.
After breakfast, you will have your first briefing at the park headquarters, where you will register and meet your assigned ranger guides before traveling to the park’s trekking starting point for your lowland gorilla adventure. You will then travel with your ranger guide, who will present you with valuable information on Kahuzi Biega National Park.
After visiting the gorillas, you will have an hour to observe them and take photos and movies of your choice, all under the supervision of your ranger guide. You will then return to your reserved hotel for drinks, lunch, and the afternoon at leisure. The lodge serves meals and offers overnight lodging.
Day 3: Guided Hike to Tshibati Waterfalls and Visit Lwiro Sanctuary.
On the third day of your 4 Days Kahuzi Biega Gorilla Trekking and Hike Tshibati Waterfalls Tour, you will get to have your breakfast in the morning before heading out to the briefing point. After your briefing, you will embark on a guided hike along Tshibati Waterfalls Trail which is situated approximately 45 minutes from the park’s entrance. You will be lead into the forest where you stand a chance to see some animals and bird species as you traverse through the forest. Once you get to the beautiful Tshibati waterfalls, you will be given ample time to soak in the waterfalls and surrounding sceneries. You will also have your packed lunch which you carried from your hotel/lodge before heading back to base where you will find your driver guide waiting for you.
After your hike and lunch break, you will visit Lwiro sanctuary which is a rehabilitation center for chimpanzees and other primates that have been rescued from the snares of poachers. Once fully rehabilitated, they are slowly released back into their natural habitats.
Retire back to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay at your hotel.
Day 4: Transfer Back to Kigali
Today, upon completing your breakfast at your hotel, you will meet with your driver guide, go over the customary briefing, and then move to Rwanda via the Bukavu border. You will then travel to Kigali, where you will have lunch and have the opportunity to visit the Kigali genocide memorial sites, which remember the legacy of the over one million Rwandans slaughtered in 1994 through education and peace-building. You will be able to hear and watch video extracts from some of the incident’s survivors before heading to Kigali International Airport for your onward travel.
