Biking Along the Congo Nile Trail in Rwanda : If you’re looking for a unique and thrilling way to explore Rwanda, consider biking the Congo Nile Trail. The 37-mile route winds its way through the pristine Rwandan countryside, passing by lakes, waterfalls and wood-and-thatch villages along the way. Along the way, you’ll encounter monkeys and a wide variety of birds — you’re sure to be amazed by the beauty of this country!
I spent a long weekend in Rwanda earlier this month, exploring the country’s capital city of Kigali and the surrounding countryside. While hiking was at the top of my to-do list, I decided to go for something different — I signed up for a biking tour along the Congo Nile Trail. I’d never done anything like this before, so I was a little nervous before the trip began… but after all of the fun and excitement I had on the tour, I can’t wait to go back again someday! Keep reading to learn more about my experience biking through the beautiful mountains of Rwanda.
When you sign up for the bike tour, you’ll be given a helmet and a pair of protective gloves to wear during your ride. You’ll also be given a water canteen to keep your hydration levels up throughout the trip.
Your bike tour will begin with a bus ride from Kigali to the town of Musanze, which is located approximately 75 miles from the city. Your tour guide will give you a safety briefing before you take off on your bikes, and you’ll learn everything you need to know about the route before you start your adventure. The scenery along the road is breathtaking, and you’ll encounter a variety of wildlife as you pass by — keep your eyes peeled for monkeys and other animals hiding in the trees!
After traveling about 25 miles along gravel roads and dirt trails, you’ll arrive at the camp where you’ll spend the night. Here, you can relax under the stars and enjoy a delicious dinner and campfire experience. Before you retire for the night, you can take a shower in one of camp’s clean bathrooms and then relax in your cozy tent for the night. The next morning, you’ll wake up to a freshly prepared breakfast before beginning your journey back to Kigali. This leg of the journey will take you back to Musanze, where you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful scenery on your way back to the city.
On my last morning in Rwanda, I woke up early to catch the sunrise at Volcanoes National Park. This was a truly memorable experience, and I’d highly recommend that anyone visiting Rwanda do the same! After enjoying the breathtaking views at the park, I took a short hike through the forest. The nature in Rwanda is truly incredible, and I enjoyed hiking through the woods and taking in the beautiful sights and sounds of nature one last time before I headed back to the airport to begin my journey home.
Overall, I had a fantastic time on my motorcycle tour through Rwanda, and I’d recommend the experience to anyone visiting the country!
